Oceanica

Naturalist and writer John Burroughs wrote, “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” I could not think of a more perfect sentiment for the times that we find ourselves in. We have weathered nearly a year of uncertainty, distancing from our loved ones and the struggle to retain a sense of comfort. Through all of this, nature has always been a refuge for me and I am humbled by the grand inspiration I can so freely draw upon. The greater world of fashion has also taken it’s cue from the calming tones of our natural surroundings, the sandy colors of a restful earth and swirling blues of tranquil seas. Nature was a common theme during my years as a painter and you will see it continue to shine in the Earth and Sea Series of my fashion creations.

I would like to share a story with you– one which manifested itself to me, first as a painting and then as the tunic, Oceanica.

Wandering on the beach, the girl felt an indescribable draw to the water. At the water’s edge, she was unaware of the dark tendrils tangled in the blue of the sea. Suddenly, she was being pulled into deep and dark waters. Conquered by surprise and shock she went limp. When she awoke she was overwhelmed by her dilemma and lifted her head to cry out. Through the oppressive darkness above her she recognized a shimmer of light. This spark was enough to ignite her strength - she knew that she would reach the sunlight. She noticed that each day that she struggled to escape, she became stronger and more resolute to be in charge of her fate. One day she was able to slip from under the sleeping eyes of her keeper and swam toward the light. She swam faster and harder than ever before and with each surge upwards the circle of light grew larger and more brilliant. Finally looking into the sun, her head broke through the water’s surface and she drew a deep breath. She stood, finally, on the beach, water running from her hair to her shoulders resembling a sheath of the most fluid fabric. In time Oceanica headed toward her home, an empowered version of the girl she had been.

I hope that this story moves you to be empowered and to find your strength as we move toward a time that is hopeful and healing. Turn your eyes to Nature and find inspiration.
